This week released Ridley Scott’s much-publicized “Napoleon,” starring Joaquin Phoenix as the French emperor. Today we invite you to play by trying to recognize eight of the posters from his filmography.

It’s the cinema but also media event of the week, the release of Napoleon by Ridley Scott, accompanied by these historians’ quarrels, inevitable when tackling such a monument of a country’s heritage.

To play the French emperor, Ridley Scott called on Joaquin Phoenix, an actor he found again twenty years after Gladiator in which he played the character of Commodus, a role which earned him his first Oscar nomination.

If Napoleon is a significant length of 2h38, Ridley Scott has announced that a long version could well see the light of day. Indeed, the director has many hours of rushes; with all this material, he has enough time to edit it in 4 hours and 30 minutes!

Agenda conflict

After The Last Duel, Jodie Comer and Ridley Scott were to reunite for Napoleon. But the actress, chosen to play Josephine, had to abandon the project due to scheduling conflicts, before being replaced by Vanessa Kirby.

A history enthusiast

This is not the first time that Ridley Scott has brought historical subjects to the screen. We owe him Les Duellistes – his first feature film, which also takes place during the Napoleonic wars -, 1492: Christopher Columbus, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven and The Last Duel. The director had wanted to bring the fate of the French emperor to the screen for a long time: “I love historical stories because History fascinates me. Napoleonic history marks the beginning of modern history. He changed the world and redefined the rules“.
