It was after meeting amateur filmmaker Byron Kennedy that together they decided to write a feature film inspired by these painful experiences and testimonies. What was initially to be a contemporary film centered on a character pacing the Australian roads to help road accident victims, will quickly take the form of a dystopian story also integrating the major event of the oil shock which occurred in 1973. .

The story goes that on the day of the auditions, actor Steve Bisley – who will land the role of Jim Goose – came with a friend with a swollen nose and various facial bruises from a fight the night before. A mouth that impresses the casting director asking the young man to come back a few days later to do some tests.

This young man is called Mel Gibson and he will land the title role of the film which will propel him to Hollywood heights. With independent funding and a very limited budget, the film, which met with enormous worldwide success, would long remain in the Guinness Book of Records as the most profitable low-budget film in history before being dethroned in the 1990s by The Blair Witch Project.
