So it’s official, the Barbie movie released just a few weeks ago is already part of the very select club of fifty-three films that have managed to exceed one billion dollars in box office revenue worldwide. It should also be noted that its director, Greta Gerwig, is the first and only woman to date among all these filmmakers to have achieved this feat solo.
A ranking at the top of which we always find the unbeatable Avatar of James Cameron. Indeed, with 2.923 billion dollars in revenue for an estimated budget of around 240 million, the film released in 2009 is one of the director’s many big successes. In second place, by a few tens of millions of dollars, is the film by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Endgame, which totaled 2.8 billion dollars in revenue. Their previous film, Avengers: Infinity War, didn’t fare too badly either, as it’s also one of the few movies – six in total – to top $2 billion in revenue with $2.052 billion.
Also note the presence of several animated films, almost all from – unsurprisingly – Disney-Pixar studios, such as Frozen and its sequel, or the last two installments of the Toy Story franchise, at with the exception of two films, produced by the Illumination Entertainment team: The Minions and Despicable Me 3.
