CINEMA: Street Fighter, a release date for the next live action film, the one with Van Damme continues to bring in big revenue for Capcom

Adapt Street Fighter at the cinema was perhaps not the smartest idea in the world, as the scenario fits on a post-it folded in four, the success of video games comes from its gameplay ultra complete. But Capcom produced in 1994 Street Fighter: The Last Stand with Jean-Claude Van Damme (Guile), Raúl Juliá (Bison) and Kylie Minogue (Cammy). A borderline feature film, directed by Steven E. de Souza, which grossed nearly $100 million at the box office.

Since then, we have been treated to other adaptations, in live action or in animation, but last year, Legendary Pictures has recovered the film adaptation rights to Street Fighterannouncing in the process the start of construction ofa new live-action film. This week, as reported The Hollywood Reporterthe distributor Sony Pictures announced that the next movie Street Fighter will be released in cinemas on March 20, 2026.

Legendary Pictures will produce the feature film in partnership with Capcom, but there is a problem. As recalled THR, directors Danny and Michael Philippou will no longer direct the film Street Fighterdue to a scheduling issue. Both brothers will be busy on Bring Her Backa new horror film fromA24after the excellent The hand in 2022. Another hiccup, the release date of the feature film Street Fighter is the same as that of Last Chance Project ofAmazon MGM Studiosa film adapted from the eponymous novel by Andy Weir directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21/22 Jump Street, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Great LEGO Adventure) with Ryan Gosling in the starring role. Enough to overshadow the fights between Ken, Ryu, Chun-Li and their friends?

This shouldn’t be too much of a problem for Capcomwhich is probably counting on the long term to make the project profitable. Very recently, during a meeting between investors, the Japanese studio admitted that the film Street Fighter from 1994 continues to bring in tens of millions of yen every year, even todayas reported Automaton. As a reminder, 10 million yen corresponds to approximately 58,200 euros. It must be said that Street Fighter: The Last Stand is not available via a subscription to a platform SVoDfans must therefore go to the cash register to watch this film, by purchasing the DVD/Blu-ray or by opting for a digital format for rental or sale, regularly putting money back into the pockets of Capcom. The DVD+Blu-ray combo of Street Fighter is available from €12.68 on Amazon Or Fnac.
