CINEMA: The Legend of Zelda, a live-action film inspired by a master of Japanese animation

The franchise adaptation project The Legend of Zelda in film is a reality, Nintendo made it official last month. It will be a live action feature film, directed by Wes Ball (The labyrinth) and produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad. Suffice to say that fans are waiting impatiently, but also with apprehension, for this film live-action.

Wes Ball recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly to tackle this crazy project, recalling that he is a fan of The Legend of Zelda For years, he even had tweeted in 2010 that “the next big motion capture film after Avatar should be The Legend of Zelda”, but that he would never have the chance to achieve it. Never say never ! However, fans will still have to wait a while before discovering the feature film, the project is still in pre-production and the team is working on the script. Wes Ball is currently very busy with Planet of the Apes: The New Kingdomexpected in May 2024, it will take a short break after its release then focus on the film with Link And Zelda.

The Legend of Zelda is a colorful video game franchise, with often refined graphics, adapting the license into an animated film would be logical, but Nintendo here made the choice of live-action, enough to surprise fans and worry them. SO, how to transcribe the universe of Zelda in film in live action? Well still drawing inspiration from a master of Japanese animation, Hayao Miyazaki, whom Wes Ball greatly admires. The director imagines the film this way The Legend of Zelda :

An incredible fantasy adventure film which would not be The Lord of the Rings, which would be its own universe. I’ve always said, I would love to see a live-action Miyazaki film. That wonder and whimsy that he brings to things, I would love to see something like that.

It’s going to be awesome. My whole life has been leading up to this moment. I grew up with Zelda and it’s the most important license, I think, it’s untapped intellectual property, if you will. So we are working hard to do something. We’re not trying to do it just because we can. We want to do something really special.

So big ambitions for a director who is currently only known for a trilogy of films aimed at teenagers and young adults (trilogy which still stands out compared to films of the same genre). Anyway, quote Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited away, Princess Mononoke, The Boy and the Heron) is enough to reassure players. While waiting to discover the film, on an unknown date, you can find The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom from €49.99 on Amazon, Cdiscount And there Fnac.
