Cinema: what will be the impact of the 2024 Games on filming in Paris?

Scheduled from July 26 to August 11, 2024 in Paris, the next Games will have an impact on the cinema industry: no shooting of historical and/or action films will be authorized in the capital during this period.

What will be the impact of the Paris Games on film and series filming in the French capital in 2024? Just nine months before the event kicks off, the CNC (National Center for Cinematography and Animated Images) held an information meeting on the subject this Tuesday, September 26.

The biopic dedicated to General de Gaulle carried by Simon Abkarian, as well as the next adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo were able to be filmed during the summer of 2023, as specified by the delegate of the Cinema Mission to the City of Paris Michel Gomez, whose the comments were collected by Le Figaro. And the Americans will be back on January 1, now that the writers’ strike is over.

But they will have to act quickly. Because it will not be possible to shoot action and/or period films and series in Paris between March 15 and October 30, according to the schedule revealed by the CNC.

Period 1: before March 15 and after November 1, 2024

  • Games Areas: All filming is possible with particular vigilance on a few sensitive work sites.
  • Outside of the Games areas: All filming is possible.

Period 2: March 16 to June 15, 2024

  • Games Areas: Ban on exceptional filming (those from action and period films) on the installation perimeters of the event sites, during this assembly period. Standard filming will be possible after expertise.
  • Outside of the Games areas: Exceptional and standard filming possible with particular vigilance on sensitive sites.

Period 3: from June 16 to September 15, 2024

  • Games area: No exceptional or standard filming during this so-called “red” period which concerns the main events scheduled from July 26 to August 11. Then those intended for para-athletes, which will be held from August 28 to September 8.
  • Outside the Games area: No exceptional filming is authorized. Standard filming is possible but in reduced number.

Period 4: from September 16 to October 30, 2024

  • Games area: Prohibition of exceptional filming on the dismantling perimeters of the event sites. Standard filming will be possible after expertise.
  • Outside the Games area: Standard and exceptional filming possible with particular vigilance on sensitive sites.

Are we heading towards postponements of planned filming? Not necessarily. In his minutes of the information meetingwhere he lists the Games sites in Île-de-France and recalls that the region finances some 150 works each year, the CNC offers alternative solutions.

HERE IS (ALMOST) PARIS

The Haussmanian style of the capital is thus found in several towns in its close suburbs (Vincennes, Courbevoie, Levallois-Perret, etc.), while Marly-le-Roi, Saint-Germain-en-Laye (where Les Trois was filmed Musketeers) or Pontoise can serve as settings for historic Paris.

The Center also details the studios available during the summer of 2024, in Île-de-France and the rest of the country. As well as fun alternatives: do you need Notre-Dame de Paris? The cathedral of Reims will do the trick (or those of Amiens and Bourges, used by Jean-Jacques Annaud for his film on the terrible fire).

And why look for bridges on the banks of the Seine when the one at the University of Lyon does the job just as well? Not to mention this Haussmanian style that we find in different cities in France, from Bordeaux to Marseille via Rennes and Strasbourg. Or the solution for special effects and other inlays.

If the D system often takes precedence on filming, the Games will ask teams to redouble their ingenuity for most of 2024. And perhaps we will only see fire. The magic of cinema, the real one.
