City pays itself now – Hallein: Dispute over holes in flood protection

Openings in the flood protection on the Salzach in order to avoid future flooding in Hallein’s inner city – this measure only seems absurd at first glance. There are already two holes, but that’s not enough for the neighbors. After a cost dispute, the mayor spoke a word of power.

During the devastating floods in July, the flood from the Halleiner Kothbach had accumulated during flood protection on the Salzach. Openings in the wall should prevent this “bathtub effect” in the future. There have been two holes for a few weeks, the costs for them were borne by the federal government (85 percent) and the municipality.

Several residents asked for a third opening. However, from the point of view of the state and flood protection experts, this is not necessary. Now the community is taking on the costs itself, and work is due to start this year. City chief Stangassinger: “The 10,000 euros are worth it to us.”
