Civil courage demonstrated – woman drifting in the mill: Grazers as a lifesaver

A woman was floating in the water of the Graz Mühlgang on Wednesday morning. An eyewitness immediately jumped into the water and pulled the 22-year-old to the bank, and other passers-by initiated a perfect rescue chain.

Three passers-by between the ages of 31 and 39 living in the Jakomini district of Graz really showed moral courage on Wednesday. A Hungarian native noticed a motionless person floating in the Mühlgang at Hergottwiesgasse 44 around 7:30 a.m. The 39-year-old didn’t hesitate for a second, immediately jumped into the water and pulled the young woman (22) to the bank. Two other witnesses (a woman and a man) called the emergency number. All three initiated first aid measures and thus set in motion a perfectly functioning rescue chain. Officers from the Kärntner Straße police station began giving chest compressions after they arrived. This was supported by a defibrillator located in the company vehicle. Together with rescue workers and other Graz police officers (Karlauer Straße and rapid intervention group), the first responders managed to determine the vital functions of the woman from Afghanistan after just 15 minutes. She was taken to the LKH and her condition is stable.
