Netflix loses, while Disney+ gains millions of new subscribers

One can only laugh about such problems at Disney +. Because in the same period that brought severe losses for Netfix, it managed to gain 7.9 million new subscribers – an insane result. In total, Disney+ now has almost 138 million users, including the more than 50 million subscribers to Disney+ Hotstar, the special Indian offer. Add in Hulu and ESPN Plus, and Disney has over 205 million subscriptions in the streaming market. This puts you almost within striking distance of Netflix, which has made losses but still holds the top spot with almost 222 million subscribers (source: The Verge).

However, this is not a guarantee for a secure future for Netflix, because the bet on the future and thus growth always counts. Disney+ is now clearly ahead here and gives Netflix a good smack. Will the Primus still be able to turn things around? Difficult to judge, because those who, like Netflix, have been increasing their prices more and more and above all offering less and less quality in return, will probably find it difficult to get through to customers in the future. An announced quality offensive is more than just necessary.

Growth yes, profit no

But even at Disney + there is not only sunshine in the face of the latest figures. Because the current growth is expensive and Disney is still losing money with the streaming service. The provider attributes this to higher costs for production, advertising and also technology. It is worrying that these costs will not decrease in the future. A possible price increase ala Netflix could only counteract this to a limited extent, because growth could be slowed down again. Therefore, Disney will probably also create an advertising-financed additional offer to compensate for costs in the foreseeable future.
