Clarins takes action against plastic pollution of the oceans

From June to September, Clarins is mobilized to fight against ocean pollution by partnering with the Plastic Odissey ship, which travels the world to raise awareness about recycling plastic waste.

Plastic is one of the most common pollutants in the oceans. If, today, cosmetic brands are more and more aware of the plastic pollution of our planet’s waters and offer alternatives to plastic packaging for their day creams, serums, lotions, foundations, mascaras, etc. , there is still a large majority of plastic packaging. If plastic can be recycled, too many people still throw it out in nature and end up in the oceans, polluting the marine and plant species that live there. According to Stanford University experts, in 2018, there were more than 150 million tonnes of plastics in the sea and according to the NGO WWF France, 8 million tonnes of plastics are dumped into the oceans each year.

Respect for biodiversity, and therefore for the ocean, is one of Clarins’ commitments. In 2020, this cosmetics brand reduced its plastic waste by 13 tonnes. In 4 years, in 2025, Clarins aims to achieve plastic neutrality, that is to say to fully compensate for its use of plastic, like carbon neutrality. In this context, Clarins is committed all summer to the Plastic Odissey ship. The latter travels the oceans to educate populations about recycling plastic waste. To do this, he goes to the most polluting countries and provides them with solutions to give plastic a second life by converting it into a resource. This expedition begins this June with French ports before traveling the world for 3 years. The Plastic Odissey ship also uses non-recyclable plastic waste as fuel!

To help Plastic Odissey, Clarins calls for a general mobilization to pick up the waste left on the edges of beaches, rivers, lakes or even in the street. So, for each video posted on Instagram with the hashtag # ClarinsObjective0, Clarins will donate 1 euro to Plastic Odissey to help them in their process. In total, Clarins wishes to raise 10,000 euros in donations. ” It is through awareness, training and recycling of plastic waste to a very large audience that used packaging will become a resource and not a pollution. ยป, Explains Christian Courtin-Clarins, Chairman of the Supervisory Committee of the Clarins group. This mobilization and this collection of donations, which is therefore free for you if you want to participate, begins in June and ends in September.

It is by mobilizing all against plastic pollution of the oceans that the latter will have a chance to reduce. We must not wait for someone else to do it for us. So if this cause affects you, talk about it around you, equip yourself with a pair of gloves and a garbage bag and collect the waste that you find on the ground!
