Gnabry breaks his arm and is out for weeks

FC Bayern is paying dearly for its confident entry into the second round of the DFB Cup: the German football record champions will have to do without Serge Gnabry for weeks. The national player breaks his arm – of all things in a collision with Bayern loanee Johannes Schenk.

Bayern Munich will have to do without Serge Gnabry for a long time after their comfortable victory in the DFB Cup against third division team Preußen Münster (4-0). The national soccer player suffered a fracture of the ulna in his left forearm and will be “missed for several weeks,” said coach Thomas Tuchel after the game on Sky: “He will have an operation in Munich tomorrow. It’s bitter. He’s an important player and a great character.”

Midfielder Leon Goretzka found it “extremely annoying”, but also encouraged Gnabry: “I broke the thing myself, luckily we play football, so it won’t take that long.”

This means that offensive player Gnabry will also be missed by the new national coach Julian Nagelsmann during his debut on the national team’s trip to the USA (October 9th to 18th). The entourage will be setting off in just under two weeks; tests against the USA and Mexico have been agreed in America.

Gnabry had to be substituted injured after eleven minutes, following a collision with Münster goalkeeper Johannes Schenk – on loan from FC Bayern. He briefly tried to continue playing, but was obviously in pain. An X-ray examination during the game provided certainty. By the second half, Gnabry was already sitting on the bench with his arm in a splint.

Bayern youngster Frans Krätzig came on as a substitute for Gnabry and scored 3-0 just before half-time (45+5). It was his first competitive goal for Munich, they had previously taken the lead through Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (9th) and Konrad Laimer (40th), Mathys Tel made the final score 4-0 in the 86th minute.

The Munich team had already started the game with personnel concerns, albeit in defense: Dayot Upamecano, Min-Jae Kim and Matthijs de Ligt were all missing regular central defenders. Leon Goretzka, for example, played on defense. But he was optimistic for the top Bundesliga game against RB Leipzig (Saturday, 6.30 p.m./Sky and in the ntv.de live ticker): “They’re coming back. I’m in good spirits for the weekend,” he said about Upamecano and Min-Jae . “We’ll have to take a look at Matthijs. But he was also in a relatively positive mood,” said Goretzka. “So I don’t think we’ll have to fill it up for weeks now.”
