For 34 years, Claus Seibel ran the “heute” news. Now the journalist has died at the age of 85.
The longtime moderator of the “heute” news, Claus Seibel (1936-2022), is dead. The journalist died on March 1st at the age of 85, as confirmed by ZDF. Seibel presented the show for 34 years. At that time he became the longest-serving news anchor in the country.
In a corresponding statement, the broadcaster describes Seibel as the “grand seigneur” of the news. Seibel, who was born in Giessen, ran his first issue on July 1, 1971. He moderated his last “heute” news on April 3, 2005.
Seibel was a “reliable and memorable companion”
“Claus Seibel was the familiar face of the ‘heute’ news for more than three decades,” explains ZDF editor-in-chief Dr. Peter Frey (64) in a statement. The journalist has the viewers as a “reliable and memorable companion […] informed about world events, from the times of the Cold War to the historical change after 1989”. It will not only “be his face […] to be remembered”, also “his style of restrained commitment […] standards to this day”.
