Clean up the dusty industry: take out insurance with one wipe

Few people like to deal with insurance, but every German has an average of eleven of them. Christian Wiens wants to change that with his startup Getsafe: signing a contract with a swipe on the smartphone. In the ntv podcast "So techt Germany", he tells us whether the industry is ready.

Insurance is a product that most Germans are reluctant to deal with, but make extensive use of it. It is not without reason that the Germans are insurance champions. Every German citizen has an average of eleven insurance policies and not always the most sensible ones.

Also Christian Vienna was annoyed by insurance. He quickly realized that there are hardly any suitable products for young people like him, who like to do everything digitally. "This is a huge industry and there is still a lot of catching up to do," says Wiens in the ntv podcast "So techt Germany". His parents had the same insurance for decades and "I thought: a cool model with which you can build super-long customer relationships".

A little later, Christian Wiens founded a startup, Insurtech, that deals with insurance. In the beginning, the main thing was to digitally organize the mass of information, usually a lot of files in the parents' basement. But this first idea quickly evaporated, "because it is extremely difficult to even establish the interfaces with traditionally outdated insurers," says Wiens with a smile. Today he and his team at Getsafe develop their own digital insurance products – "for young people who like to do everything on their smartphones," he summarizes his idea.

In his opinion, the insurance industry is a very special one that has not changed. "It is all the more complicated to clean up the encrusted structures," remembers Wiens. To do this, the company had to build its own technology platform. "We had to build it ourselves, that's why it took so long and that's why we needed so much capital."

In the new issue of "So techt Germany", Wiens explains why Getsafe has settled in Heidelberg and whether there are particularly smart and affordable specialists.
