After practicing yoga or the fitness program, you should clean your yoga mat. You can find out which treatment is best for your mat here.

Yoga practice, Pilates exercises or a roll backwards: a yoga mat has to endure a lot and needs appropriate care. We reveal here how you can tackle sweat and dirt.

Cleaning the yoga mat properly – it depends on the material

Ideally, the manufacturer provides cleaning instructions that can be used to properly clean the yoga mat. If this is not the case, we will introduce you to options for cleaning the various types of mats. Because so that you have something from her for as long as possible, you should clean her according to the material.

Rubber mat

Be careful with a rubber mat: after your yoga session, clean it with a damp cloth and let it dry completely. If it needs more intensive cleaning, rinse it off, but note the following no-gos:

  1. Soak in water
  2. Soap or
  3. use oily detergents.

You should avoid such cleaning agents so that your mat does not become slippery. Allow to dry completely after showering! As an alternative to the water shower, you can rub it with a mixture of water and vinegar to disinfect it.

Cork yoga mat

Cork is hard-wearing and has antibacterial properties, so aggressive cleaning agents are not necessary. Again, use a damp cloth to wipe it off.

PVC mats

PVC mats are easy to care for: the coarsest dirt is removed regularly with a damp cloth – and if you want also mild soap. If the manufacturer says so, you can also wash them in the washing machine on the delicate cycle.

Cotton mat

You can wash the cotton yoga mat in the machine at low temperature or by hand in cold water.

This is how you make the mat non-slip

Does your new yoga mat not seem slip-proof? Don't worry, this will subside over time, because the first oily film will slowly peel off with use.

If it continues to slide, check to see if you can take it with you right side down lay. Most of the time, the non-slip side is wavy. If you cannot make out the anti-slip side or if the floor is not suitable for a yoga mat anyway, get an anti-slip mat underneath.

Yoga mat smells? This is how it works odor-free

After cleaning, the yoga mat should also be odor-free. If it isn't, try the smell Air out to remove. To do this, ideally hang them on a clothes horse and place it on the balcony or terrace, avoiding direct sunlight. If both are not available, only ventilation remains in the apartment. Choose a room that is as well-ventilated as possible by hanging it up rolled out.
