Clear lead – Mercedes-AMG One breaks Nordschleife record

The fastest street-legal production car on the Nordschleife comes from Mercedes: The Mercedes-AMG One set a new record of 6:35.138 minutes on the 20.832-kilometre Eifel circuit. Which record holder he pushes off the throne is somehow a matter of opinion.

Officially, it is the Manthey Racing-optimized Porsche 911 GT2 RS that completed the course in 6:43.30 minutes in 2021. Not everyone sees the car as a production vehicle, however, because it has been optimized externally. On the other hand, Porsche offers the Manthey Performance Kit as an original accessory with a factory guarantee. But Manthey is not Porsche. The other competitor is the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, which clocked almost five seconds more in autumn 2020 with 6:48.047 minutes. But there is no mistaking the current record holder. The 1063 hp and 2.75 million euro One, which set off on the record run as standard, was driven by works driver Maro Engel. On October 28th, with an outside temperature of 20 degrees, he drove a total of four laps at speeds of up to 338 km/h. The lap times were measured by neutral experts and certified by a notary. The time for the shortened version of the track is 6:30.705 minutes. The conditions were anything but ideal: “I didn’t expect that we would be able to set such a lap time in these track conditions . In some crucial areas of the track it was not completely dry and therefore tricky. That was a special challenge,” said Maro Engel afterwards. The “E Performance Hybrid” delivers a total of 1063 hp with a 1.6-liter V6 petrol engine and four electric motors, and the top speed is limited to 352 km/h. The One has a carbon monocoque and carbon body, a load-bearing engine/transmission unit, active aerodynamics and a push-rod chassis. The fully variable all-wheel drive consists of a hybrid-driven rear axle and an electrically driven front axle. The maximum camber values within the delivery tolerance were selected for the record run. Maro Engel selected the “Race Plus” driving program. That means: Active, maximum possible aerodynamics, tight chassis tuning, vehicle lowering by 37 mm on the front axle and 30 mm on the rear axle and full power from all engines. The Drag Reduction System (DRS) is activated by the driver by pressing a button on the steering wheel. The front louvres on the fender retract as does the upper aero element of the two-stage rear wing. If the system detects deceleration or a certain degree of lateral acceleration, the aero elements extend again at lightning speed.
