ROME (Reuters) – Italian environmental activists on Friday threw soup at a painting by Vincent Van Gogh on display in Rome and protected by glass, before sticking to the wall of the gallery.

The four women of the group Ultima Generazione (Last Generation) aimed at the painting “The Sower at Sunset”, shouting slogans against global warming and fossil fuels.

“These issues should be on the news and political agendas (…), but they are only addressed by ‘outrageous’ actions like the one this morning,” the group said in a statement.

Representatives from nearly 200 countries will gather in Egypt next week for the 27th UN Climate Conference of the Parties (COP27), as pressure mounts for tougher measures to combat global warming.

The painting was protected by glass and suffered no damage, said Camilla Talfani, spokeswoman for the exhibition organizers.
