The confrontation broke out when the 300-strong demonstration at Bankenplatz broke through the police tape to Steinenberg and moved in the direction of the central Barfüsserplatz.

The police responded with massive rubber bullet fire and the use of tear gas. In a Twitter message, the canton police spoke of “several warnings” before the use of funds. However, nothing was heard on site, as reported by the Keystone-SDA correspondent.

Two policewomen and one policeman were injured by fireworks during the unauthorized demonstration. This is reported by the cantonal police of Basel-Stadt. The police forces were specifically attacked and an escalation was actively sought. The police officers were thrown at various places with stones, firecrackers, bottles and bags of paint, the cantonal police continued.

Masked demonstrators whistled at the police

The demonstration train formed again after the collision with the police. Around 150 participants then marched over the Wettstein Bridge to Kleinbasel in the direction of Messeplatz.

There, police cordons denied access to the square, whereupon the demonstrators moved on to the peripheral Erlenmatt area. Around 300 people had gathered at 3:00 p.m. for the unauthorized “revolutionary climate demo” at Wette Park near the SBB train station.

Most of them masked themselves and were equipped with goggles. Calls by the police to enter into a dialogue were met with whistles.
