Cloudflare: CDN disruption causes problems for websites worldwide (Update: Statement)

CLOUDFLARE

500 Internal Server Error – no longer works. Problems with the IT service provider Cloudflare are currently causing numerous websites to be unavailable. Update: We have a statement.

Numerous websites are unavailable on Tuesday morning. The error message “500 Internal Server Error” can be seen. The Discord service is affected, for example, but also numerous news and other websites in Germany and internationally.

Commonality: Cloudflare

Since many of the currently unavailable websites use the US IT infrastructure service provider Cloudflare and its CDN to be able to deliver their services quickly, this is probably where the problem originated. As Netzwoche reports, there was a “record size” DDoS attack on the service provider last week. The current failure has nothing to do with that, says the operator in a statement that is available to Netzwelt.

Earlier this morning, Cloudflare experienced an outage on portions of our network. This wasn’t the result of an attack.

A network change in some of our data centers resulted in part of our network being unavailable. Due to the nature of the incident, customers may have had difficulty reaching websites and services that rely on Cloudflare from approximately 0628-0720 UTC. Cloudflare worked on a fix within minutes and the network is now back to normal.

Given the size of Cloudflare and the percentage of the internet that relies on our network, it’s important that when we have issues, we speak openly and transparently about what happened, why it happened, and what we’re doing to make sure it’s fixed not happen again.

Statement from Cloudflare

Cloudflare also published a blog post detailing the incident. You can find him here. The service is now up and running again and the affected websites can be accessed again.

A new version of this article appeared at 3:24 p.m. and was expanded to include a statement from Cloudflare.
