Club confirms investigation
Hertha professional temporarily in custody in the training camp

Goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck returned to Hertha BSC just a few weeks ago. Now he is apparently causing a scandal in the Berlin training camp in Austria. After an argument in an inn, he is said to have been temporarily taken into custody. The club confirms investigations by the police.

The Austrian police are concerned with an incident during the Hertha BSC training camp. “We can confirm that the police are investigating one of our players, but we ask for your understanding that no further details can be given out of consideration for the ongoing investigations,” said the second division soccer team. The Berliners have been in Zell am See since Wednesday to prepare for the season.

The “Bild” newspaper reported on a physical altercation in an inn on Saturday evening, as a result of which a Hertha professional was said to have been taken into custody on Sunday. According to the newspaper, it should be goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck.

“This verbal argument then escalated into a physical altercation, during which the 28-year-old injured the 22-year-old indefinitely on the body,” said a police spokesman for “Bild”. “Witnesses then informed the emergency services. The 22-year-old was taken to the Tauern Clinic in Zell am See after his first aid.” According to the newspaper, the man was badly injured in the head and has not yet been able to be heard.

The Hertha professional is currently back in the team hotel, reports the German Press Agency. As the police in Zell am See announced, “both detention cells are empty” in the holiday resort’s police station.

Gersbeck returned to Hertha this summer after four years at Karlsruher SC. From 2004 he had already played for the Berliners as a youth player, had been loaned out several times in the meantime and had played his only Bundesliga game to date in the 2013/14 season. “I’m coming back as a seasoned two-league player,” said Gersbeck on his return from Karlsruhe. However, he will probably have to take a place behind regular keeper Oliver Christensen if he is not sold. Gersbeck was born in Berlin and was once a fan himself in the east curve. “There is a club and a city that stands above it, and that is Berlin,” he emphasized.

The Berliners won their first test match on Saturday against the newly promoted Belgian first division team RWD Molenbeek 2-1 in Leogang. Another test against the Belgian champions Royal Antwerpen in Saalfelden is scheduled for this Sunday afternoon. The training camp of the Berliners in Austria ends next Friday. The second division season begins for coach Pal Dardai’s team with the away game at Fortuna Düsseldorf on July 29th (8.30 p.m./Sky/Sport1 and in the ntv.de live ticker).
