Party mood at dance clubs: pent-up demand drives people to the bars. New Year’s Eve parties are sometimes almost fully booked.

Two years of pandemic misery have accumulated an enormous amount of pent-up demand among party-goers and club operators. The lifting of the protective measures at the beginning of the year was a bang for them, which flushed a first wave onto the dance floors. After the usual summer holiday doldrums, the party mood picked up again, and now before New Year’s Eve 2022, the sigh of relief from the club scene is almost drowning out the bass.

We’re back to business as usual.

The tenor from the industry across the country sounds correspondingly relieved. “We’re back to business as usual,” says a delighted Valentin Aschwanden from the Basel club “Das Viertel” in the Dreispitz area; New Year’s Eve is already sold out. The latter also applies to the “Sandoase” in Basel’s Rhine port.

According to the Bern Bar and Club Commission, winter is generally high season for the outlet industry, and the industry is recovering noticeably. According to Alexander Bücheli from the Zurich Bar & Club Commission, the scene is now “happy and euphoric” again. This year’s Advent season without protective measures was very good.

After the summer break, a lot of people came again.

Nightlife is also returning in Freiburg, says Gian Andrea Pokorny from “Vingtième” near the train station: “After the summer break, a lot of people came back”. And in Valais, too, the clubs are back to where they were before Corona, estimates Sebastian Hug, head of “Perron 1” in Brig.

Corona is still having an effect

Even if the dance stages are shaking again: The two Corona years have left their mark. After two years of crisis, the staff is ailing and you have to be careful, warns the Fri-Son music club in Fribourg. Other club bosses say the same.

The fact that commercial events and parties for young people are back to what they used to be, or even better, is also confirmed by Daniel Schneider, general manager of the organizer organization “Kartell Culturel Le Singe” in Biel. However, jazz or world music concerts and cabaret events have recovered less well.

Schneider attributes this difference to audiences: People as young as 35 still assessed the risk of large gatherings when going out. Corona is not gone, and you can still end up in bed for a week.

Aschwanden has the impression that some guests discovered other interests during the pandemic and are now staying away. Schneider also sees new interests in some people: more people went biking, and Netflix has grown enormously. The boys were partying now, but the others might be more likely to stay at home. The festivals went great even in the warm season.

Nobody wants to experience a time like this again.

The two Corona years were very hard for his house, says Sebastian Hug – “no one wants to experience such a time anymore”. To put it bluntly, the support money from the state was “three times nothing”. Two years without sales, while rents and all the operating costs continued, it was about survival. Even if things are going very well again now, you still have to plug the holes of the Corona years.

Meanwhile, Alexander Bücheli says his Zurich association was surprised at how few companies had to give up during the pandemic. Reserves and state aid would have contributed to this. In view of a possible power shortage, he still has mixed feelings about the future of the club. “A second phase with such massive restrictions would be really difficult.”
