Coach Oliver Glasner despairs of Frankfurt’s quality

Eintracht Frankfurt staggers
Coach Glasner denies the quality of his defense

The end of the Champions League during the week, then the defeat against competitor Union Berlin on Sunday: The mood at Eintracht Frankfurt could be better at the moment. One part of the team in particular makes coach Oliver Glasner at a loss.

Oliver Glasner was angry. Visibly loaded, the Eintracht Frankfurt coach had to pull himself together after the disappointing result in the Alte Försterei. “I’m very careful because anything I say can and will be used against me. And that’s why today it’s better to keep my mouth shut.”

But Glasner, who was clearly seething after the 0: 2 (0: 0) at Union Berlin on Sunday, could not hold everything back. From the Köpenickers, the coach said, pissed off at the DAZN microphone, he hadn’t seen much: “They punished our mistakes. Union showed how you can win without playing a goal chance”. When asked about the two goals Glasner chose hard words: “It’s a question of quality and I don’t know how you can train quality.”

Above all, the again shaky defensive got rid of their fat. “We had good offensive moves, but in the end we screwed it up at the back,” Glasner said. The first goal by Rani Khedira (53rd), who poked the ball over the line in the turmoil, came from a “free corner kick”, the coach couldn’t think of much about the second.

What will happen to the contract extension?

Kevin Behrens left Tuta and Hrvoje Smolcic after a long drive from Union keeper Frederik Rönnow and finally tunneled in to Eintracht goalkeeper Kevin Trapp (75′). “I’m sorry, that had nothing to do with football. How we’re doing there is underground,” said the Austrian.

The harsh criticism of the quality of your own defense – a requirement for the next season? “It’s not the first time and we have to be honest. There’s no point in always palavering. The fact is that we always lose our games the same way,” explained Glasner.

The coach cleared up rumors that the relationship between him and sports director Markus Krösche was tense, at least before the game. The cooperation is excellent: “We have the same opinion on 80 to 90 percent of the issues,” different views are discussed.

The club made him an offer to extend his contract, Glasner said: “He wouldn’t do it if it didn’t fit between Markus and me. I wouldn’t think about it either. If I extend, Markus is a reason for it,” man have “the same vision of unity”. And that should probably include appearances on the European stage again.

But the Hessians, who had caused enthusiasm for long stretches of the season, have now been waiting for a win for six competitive games. In sixth place, Frankfurt is still on an international course, but after the defeat in the Champions League round of 16 against SSC Naples, another European adventure is currently in danger with the bankruptcy in the Alte Försterei. With Wolfsburg, Leverkusen and Mainz, three teams are threatening Frankfurt.
