Cobra Kai on Netflix: which actor from the series was nominated for an Oscar?

The fourth season of “Cobra Kai” is available on Netflix. Did you know that one of the actors of the “Karate Kid” series has been nominated for an Oscar?

The fourth season of Cobra Kai has been available on Netflix since December 31st. In these never-before-seen episodes, eternal rivals Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence have decided to join forces to face the Cobra Kai dojo, led with an iron fist by John Kreese and his new ally Terry Silver (the great villain of the film Karate Kid 3).

The object of a real cult among viewers, the series is now an original Netflix production, after an initial broadcast on the ephemeral streaming platform Youtube Red. As a reminder, Cobra Kai is the direct sequel to the film Karate Kid (1984), and its three sequels (therefore including the spin-off, Miss Karate Kid with Hilary Swank). The original performers of the feature film, Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, are making their comeback in the roles that revealed them to the general public.

True icons of world popular culture, the two actors have nevertheless experienced ups and downs in their respective careers, notably with a major slump in the early 2000s. One of the two nevertheless stood out, by winning a prestigious Oscar nomination!

The Karate Kids at the Oscars

William Zabka was indeed nominated for the Oscars in 2004, but not for an acting award. The latter was indeed selected for the Czech short film Most directed by Bobby Garabedian which he co-wrote and produced (American by birth, Zabka has Czech origins through his father, Stan Zabka).

Recall that the interpreter of Johnny Lawrence is not the only star of the Karate Kid franchise to have been nominated for the Oscars: Pat Morita (who played Master Miyagi in the films, the series having emerged after his death) was nominated for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the first film.

The heroine of the spin-off Miss Karate Kid, Hilary Swank has been awarded the statuette for Best Actress twice, for the films Boys Don’t Cry and Million Dollar Baby. Appeared in the remake The Karate Kid (which serves as an unofficial episode), Jackie Chan, meanwhile, received an Honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement in 2016.

Available since December 31, the fourth season of Cobra Kai is already a huge success on Netflix, appearing in the ranking of the most viewed programs on the platform in many countries. The third season of the program will also compete this Sunday at the Golden Globes in the category Best comedy series.
