It was almost 24 years ago: In October 2000, a 21-year-old man lay dead in his car in Münchenstein (BL). As various media reported, the victim was found shot in the head in a red Smart car.
The police and public prosecutor’s office were quickly able to establish a connection to drug crime. The search for the perpetrator was unsuccessful at the time.
New forensic tools in use
The Basel police have been searching for the alleged perpetrator for almost a quarter of a century. Success in the investigation now seems possible.
Thanks to new forensic possibilities, it has now been possible to locate the suspected perpetrator. It is a 59-year-old Swiss man who lived in Germany. He was extradited at the beginning of December 2023 and is in custody. The Baselland public prosecutor’s office has opened a criminal investigation. It is the presumption of innocence.
