Climate activists deface Christmas trees

The Brandenburg Gate and the World Clock in Berlin have already glowed orange in recent months after climate activists sprayed them. Now the Last Generation is targeting symbols of the Christmas season in keeping with December.

The climate protection group Last Generation has sprayed Christmas trees with orange paint in several German cities. In Berlin it hit a large Christmas tree in front of the Federal Council near Potsdamer Platz. Two demonstrators distributed the paint from fire extinguishers and had themselves filmed and photographed.

According to Last Generation, an elaborately decorated tree in Leipzig’s Mädlerpassage was also sprayed. The police cordoned off the area and are investigating.

According to the police, trees were also colored by activists in Oldenburg, Munich and Nuremberg. According to the climate activists, there were also actions in Rostock and Kiel. Photos showed demonstrators with placards that read “Contemplative about the catastrophe? Charity = climate protection.” The group said that despite the “flashing lights, shiny decorations and festive atmosphere”, climate change should not be forgotten and that the world is hurtling towards a future full of catastrophe.

The last generation has been demonstrating and protesting since the beginning of 2022 with road blockades and other actions for more climate protection. The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin was also sprayed with paint. Numerous investigations and trials are underway against members of the group, many of whom have already been convicted.
