Colruyt N: Spar Colruyt Group opens a renovated Spar in Sint-Idesbald on Thursday 17 February

Monday, February 14, 2022

The opening of the new Spar in Saint-Idesbald is scheduled for Thursday 17 February. The store remained closed from January 24 to February 16 due to extensive remodeling work. Founded by the parents of Sylvia Vandenbroucke, the family business opened its doors in 1969. In 2000, Sylvia joined the family business at the time called “Selfservice Weekend”. It didn’t take long for Sylvia to become the proud manager of the renamed ‘Spar Weekend’ store.

Improved in-store experience

“I decided some time ago to completely renovate the store. It’s not that it was obsolete, as we regularly renovated one or the other department, but we wanted to go further this time,” says Sylvia. Expanding the store was practically impossible, so we reviewed the layout. “The objective was to create a clearer and more contemporary interior. In the first part of the store, we have installed lower shelves so that all the departments are visible, all the fresh departments have benefited from a little more space and the frozen products have been brought closer to the checkouts.

Our interior has been completely renovated and we have taken the environment into account

With these changes, Sylvia hopes to provide a better in-store experience in her “Spar Weekend”. “During the works, which lasted about three and a half weeks, our interior was completely renovated: we have a brand new bakery, new shelves, a refurbished floor, a new ceiling, etc. And we obviously think about the environment: all fridges and freezers are powered by CO2 “.

An extended upper range

Customers will not only benefit from a new interior, but also from a new assortment. According to Sylvia, however, the basics have remained the same: The wide range of fruit and vegetables, the selection of quality wines, the many regional beers and the delicious cheeses remain at the heart of the new concept. “But we want to go even further,” continues Sylvia. “We have enlarged our bakery, but we will now have the dough risen from our guns and baguettes in modern proofing chambers.

We are also focusing on delicious tapas and our catering department has had a facelift. Vegetarian and vegan products are also highlighted, as are “genieten-aan-zee lekkers”. I am thinking in particular of a delicious wine, tasty appetizers, etc. The many local delicacies are also part of this vision. At the “Spar Weekend” you will find desserts and cheeses from the “Beauvoordse Walhoeve” farm in Veurne, potatoes grown in the dunes (in summer), a very wide assortment of Jules Destrooper biscuits from Lo-Reninge, without forgetting of course the famous St-Idesbald beer! Shopping in comfort and then enjoying your purchases, this is what we offer our customers”.

A strong and varied team

Sylvia is fortunate to have a large team. It can count on 17 permanent employees, 25 student workers and a few flexijobs. Not everyone lives on the coast. “Some students live in the interior of the country, but they come to work with us with pleasure during their holidays by the sea. Since we have a lot of French-speaking clients, it is important that our staff be bilingual. I have the chance to work with a happy mix of French and Dutch speakers who really form a nice group in which young people and more experienced workers get along well”.
