PARIS (Reuters) – Actor Jean-Louis Trintignant, emblematic hero of “A man and a woman” alongside Anouk Aimée, died on Friday at the age of 91, his family announced to AFP.

In a press release, his wife Mariane Hoepfner Trintignant specifies that the actor of “And God … created woman” died “peacefully, of old age, this morning, at his home, in the Gard, surrounded by his loved ones” .

Silver Bear for Best Actor at the Berlin Festival in 1968 for “The Lying Man”, Best Actor Award at Cannes in 1969 for “Z”, César for Best Actor in 2013 for “Amour”, this figure of auteur film, which dubbed Jack Nicholson in French in “Shining”, enjoyed international fame.

The worldwide success of “A man and a woman” by Claude Lelouch, awarded the Palme d’or at Cannes in 1966, and the Oscar for best foreign film, earned him a star aura, but this theater enthusiast and motor racing preferred intimacy to thundering works like “Encounters of the Third Kind” by Steven Spielberg or “Apocalypse Now” by Francis Ford Coppola, where roles had been offered to him.

The life of Jean-Louis Trintignant, who had revealed in 2017 to suffer from cancer, was turned upside down, according to his own words, by the death of his daughter, the actress Marie Trintignant, killed by his companion Bertrand Cantat in 2003.
