Comics: Jean-Claude Mézières, designer of “Valérian et Laureline” died at 83

He is the father of the science fiction series Valérian et Laureline, with his childhood friend Pierre Christin

French cartoonist Jean-Claude Mézières, a major actor in comics in France, died on the night of Saturday to Sunday at the age of 83, announced his publisher Dargaud.

He was known for having created with his childhood friend Pierre Christin the famous science fiction characters Valérian and Laureline. In particular, he exercised a mentoring role with many designers and also worked in illustration, photography, cinema and television.

“Sensitive to the environment without being an activist, he liked to rest in his house in Aveyron, surrounded by nature… His high standards, his energy, his strong personality, his benevolence, his simplicity, his joie de vivre, his curiosity, made him a precious and deeply endearing being”, testifies his publishing house Dargaud.
