The big end for the GTI meeting at Wörthersee apparently not only shocked fans, but also one or the other at VW. After a Bavarian tuner recently announced its own GTI meeting, VW is now announcing a huge event in its hometown of Wolfsburg.
It is scheduled to take place for the first time on the Ascension Day weekend in 2024: “In front of the gates of the Volkswagen plant, the ‘GTI Coming Home’ event will in future welcome enthusiasts and fans of sporty Volkswagen models,” says Wolfsburg. “Our GTI fans are for Volkswagen of great importance and that is why the exchange with them is very important to us,” says Imelda Labbé, Member of the Board of Management for Sales, Marketing and After Sales at Volkswagen Passenger Cars Unfortunately, offering the GTI fan community a new home for the event in Wolfsburg was canceled.” Whether we can also expect “rubber, rubber”, bare skin and pouring alcohol there remains to be seen. In any case, VW wants to follow the wishes of the fans: “When planning the event, we also want to take the wishes of the fans into account, because above all it should be a meeting for them. Accordingly, we will certainly be able to offer some highlights and surprises in the coming year.” Since 1982, the GTI meeting had brought money and attention to Lake Wörthersee and to Reifnitz, and over the years more and more tuning fans came to Carinthia on the Ascension Day weekend. Now they obviously wanted to give the yearly plagued residents a rest. As a result, the municipality of Maria Wörth recently made the decision not to continue the annual event. This year, on May 13, GTI fans can make a pilgrimage to the Pyramidenkogel car park, which a Bavarian tuner has rented for this purpose. One can assume that there will be a lot of GTIs in the area around the time. The future will have to show whether the GTI meeting will be established in Wolfsburg. BMW has only just learned that relocating a brand event with a new orientation is not easy. The BMW Motorcycle Days have been taking place in Berlin since 2022 at the traditional location in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The first Berlin edition was relatively sparsely attended.
