Commercial building in Satigny – Major fire in industrial zone near Geneva – News

  • A major fire broke out in the Meyrin-Satigny industrial zone on the outskirts of Geneva on Sunday afternoon.
  • Around 100 firefighters were on duty and had to evacuate several people.
  • The affected commercial building houses a climbing hall, various companies and a parking lot.

The fire and rescue service (SIS) was alerted around 3:30 p.m. because of the heavy smoke development with over 50 calls from eyewitnesses, confirmed SIS spokesman Nicolas Millot. Smoke could be seen on the roof of a building on the edge of Zimeysa, Meyrin-Satigny’s industrial area.

As a result of this alarm, a climbing hall containing ten people, including a child, could be evacuated immediately. Embers soon fell on the foam mats in the hall, where the fire was able to spread quickly and completely destroyed this part of the commercial building. The building also houses a five-story parking garage and various businesses. Cars parked nearby were engulfed in flames. Nobody got hurt.

The smoke could be seen from afar. Videos posted on social media and online media showed massive black smoke billowing from a commercial building.

Large use also because of the Bise

The fire brigade deployed fire engines around the building to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further due to the strong bise. The fire was under control by 6:30 p.m.

In addition, protective measures had to be taken to prevent pollution of the river Nant d’Avril and the Rhone.

Around 100 professional firefighters from SIS and Geneva Airport, as well as volunteers from the municipalities of Satigny, Vernier and Meyrin, were deployed with 35 vehicles. Around 20 canton police officers, municipal officials and border guards cordoned off the area.
