FRANKFURT, September 27 (Reuters) – Bettina Orlopp, appointed chief executive of Commerzbank earlier this week, met virtually with UniCredit bankers on Friday morning as the German bank began discussions with its Italian counterpart over a possible takeover , two sources close to the matter told Reuters.

Italy’s second-largest bank is pushing for a merger with Commerzbank in which it took a stake earlier this month. The German bank, which wishes to remain independent, is seeking to refine its defense against Unicredit’s appetite.

It was not immediately possible to determine which UniCredit executives were present.
