Commissioner suspended after racist greeting card

A police commissioner saw fit to send a greeting card with a design echoing police violence, which shocked members of his station. He was suspended from his duties and an investigation was opened.

It is with a drawing intended to be humorous and ironic on police violence that the commissioner of the district of Plaisir (Yveline) accompanied his greeting card. Imagined by the cartoonist Wingz, the illustration has a "racist connotation" in this context, in the eyes of the Ministry of the Interior. We see a policeman asking a black man to approach his service vehicle, explaining that his "taser refill on the cigarette lighter". A joke in very bad taste, at a time when police violence is more and more denounced.

"As soon as I learned of this" greeting card ", the General Inspectorate of the National Police was seized and has already heard this commissioner (Friday). I suspended him as a precaution", Gérald Darmanin said on Twitter, Saturday, January 9. By seizing the IGPN and suspending the official, the Minister of the Interior intends to show that such a card is not acceptable, moreover while the cases of police violence have been numerous in the last months. That, racist, the beating of a black music producer, Michel Zecler, on November 21, by several police officers, had in particular caused a lot of reaction.

This drawing "shocked a lot of people for its racist connotation", explains the Ministry of the Interior to AFP. Its sending by the commissioner as a greeting card created "internal outcry", indicates a union source from Yvelines. Officials from the police station said they were shocked to be associated with such a message. "It is incomprehension. It discredits the entire police station ", adds this union member.
