PARIS (Reuters) – A new high-voltage line between France and Italy, currently under construction, will be commissioned at the beginning of the third quarter of 2022, the operator of the French electricity network RTE announced on Tuesday.

RTE expects the interconnection to be commissioned at half capacity, then at full load from the end of the third quarter.

The interconnector was expected to be operational by the end of 2020 but suffered significant delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This underground power line will be the first direct current link between Italy and France and will allow an increase of 1,200 megawatts (MW), or approximately 40%, of the electricity transmission capacity between the two countries. The maximum exchange capacity will thus reach 4,350 MW.
