Company named Meta sues ex-Facebook for renaming itself Meta

Meta, formerly Facebook, is unlikely to have to change its name again. But the fact remains that several companies named Meta, whether they evolve in tech or not, have come forward since the web giant rebranded itself in October 2021. One of them, Meta.is, even aims to bend the Palo Alto firm. Or at least to reach a financial agreement in court?

“On October 28, 2021, Facebook seized our META brand and name, which we’ve put our blood, sweat and tears to build for over twelve years.explains Meta in a press release. Today, after eight months of trying to negotiate in good faith with Facebook to no avail, we had no choice but to take legal action against them. The lawsuit alleges that Facebook infringed META’s federally registered trademarks and common law trademark rights, and engaged in gross acts of unfair competition.”

Founded in 2010, Meta.is describes itself as “the original META” and “industry pioneer of immersive and experiential technologies”. The company rightly criticizes Meta/Facebook for leading “the same immersive experiences, at the same events and locations, and working with the same creators and companies”. And necessarily to harm him: “As a result of Facebook’s actions, consumers are likely to mistakenly believe that META’s products and services emanate from Facebook or that META is affiliated with Facebook. The META brand is now infected with toxicity inextricably linked to Facebook.”

A complaint has therefore been filed, and the case should be followed up in the coming weeks or months. But a less publicized sequel, probably, and not very favorable to small businesses.
