Ivan Klasnic collects money for kidney damage

It takes 14 years for Werder Bremen's former striker Ivan Klasnic: After a long legal battle, the Croatian is now receiving compensation for his kidney damage, for which he blames the doctors who previously treated him. "No money in the world," but could make up for the damage to health.

The 14 year long legal dispute with his ex-club Werder Bremen and former doctors has come to a conciliatory end for former Bundesliga professional Ivan Klasnic. As the Sportschau reported, Klasnic receives more than four million euros in compensation for pain and suffering. The Croat had sued because he held his ex-club, the Reha-Zentrum Bremen GmbH and the doctors treating him responsible for his kidney damage.

According to ARD information, the parties have now reached a settlement before the Bremen Higher Regional Court. Klasnic's lawyer Matthias Teichner told ARD that he was basically satisfied with this amount. It is significantly higher than the amount that the Bremen Regional Court initially set but Klasnic had not accepted. Therefore, the case went to the Higher Regional Court.

"Doctors' regrets long overdue"

The new amount was "more suitable to create a feeling of justice," said the lawyer. However, "no money in the world can make up for the considerable and permanent damage to my client's health". Compensation is paid by insurance companies, the doctors themselves are not prosecuted. "At least the doctors were now ready to express their regret about the incidents in comparison," said Teichner. "In my opinion, this was long overdue."

Klasnic, with Werder champions and DFB Cup winners, had received painkillers in his active career, which in too high doses can lead to kidney damage. The 40-year-old has now had three transplants and will continue to have health problems. "I feel good, I am happy and I want to be 100 years old," he said to the "Kreiszeitung Syke" in January after his 40th birthday.

Like all chronically ill people, the corona pandemic then presented him with major problems, because of which he hardly dares to leave the house, as he explained in March: "I'm afraid of course. But I try to curb this fear by avoiding people," said Klasnic at the time "t-online.de".
