Tesla’s construction project in Grünheide is a major encroachment on nature. Such projects often have to be compensated, for example with reforestation projects. The electric car pioneer therefore costs a whopping twelve million euros – but the company does not have to pay most of this itself.

For the construction of a factory in Grünheide, Brandenburg, the US electric car manufacturer Tesla actually has to make a compensation payment according to the building code. This should ensure that the construction is ecologically compensated at another location. The costs now amount to around 12 million euros.

As the “Business Insider” reports, the group did not pay this sum itself, but received strong support from the Brandenburg government, which took over around 8 million euros. The government is said to have taken the money from a fund that contains the assets of the former governing party of the GDR, the SED. The portal is based on a small request from left-wing MPs Christian Görke and Thomas Domres.

Tesla boss Elon Musk landed in Berlin yesterday and met with representatives of the Brandenburg state government. “Very relaxed evening meeting,” tweeted Brandenburg’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Jörg Steinbach, about a photo of Musk in a black T-shirt and a scarf. Accordingly, Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke and Musk’s family were also present at the meeting. “We exchanged trustfully about the tasks still to be done,” wrote Steinbach.

Tesla is building a car factory in Grünheide near Berlin near the capital’s airport. The e-car pioneer plans to build around 500,000 of the compact Model 3 and Model Y series there every year. Originally, the company wanted to start production in July. The end of the year is now in the room. Union Chancellor candidate and CDU boss Armin Laschet is planning a visit to the Tesla factory on Friday.

According to Environment Minister Axel Vogel, the Brandenburg State Office for the Environment (LfU) has so far received 44 objections to the construction of the factory following the renewed public display of the plans. The deadline for objections does not end until August 19th. In the first interpretation of the documents last year, 373 objections were received and in a second interpretation 110. After the deadline, the LfU would decide whether there would be another public hearing, the minister said.
