ENTERTAINMENT

Ridley Scott was working on a Napoleon film with Joaquin Phoenix. However, an HBO series by Steven Spielberg on the same subject could eclipse the project.

  • Film and series fans can expect the biggest thematic competition since “The Big Crawl” and “Antz”.
  • Not only Ridley Scott has dealt with Napoleon Bonaparte, Steven Spielberg is also planning a project about the French emperor.
  • While Scott’s film could still be waiting for us in 2023, Spielberg’s series still has a long way to go.

“Gladiator” director Ridley Scott is adapting the life of Napoleon Bonaparte with “Joker” star Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role – sounds promising, right? For this reason, “Napoleon” is already eagerly awaited by fans of historical film. Who else could film the story of the French emperor and general better?

Appearance: Steven Spielberg! The successful director is currently in Berlin and is being honored there for his life’s work as part of the Berlinale. He revealed that he doesn’t yet know which film project he wants to work on after “The Fabelmans”, but he has been working on another project for 10 years.

In collaboration with Christiane Kubrick and Jan Harlan, we are realizing a major production for HBO, based on Stanley [Kubricks] Original screenplay “Napoloeon” based. We are working on “Napoleon” as a seven-part miniseries.

In fact, Stanley Kubrick had been working on his Napoleon project back in the 1980s. Filming was to take place in France, Great Britain and Romania with 4,000 actors, but after the failure of the film “Waterloo” no studio dared to tackle the complex historical project.

Instead, Kubrick shot “Barry Lyndon,” and now it’s up to Spielberg to implement Kubrick’s script. Of course, there are adjustments, after all, Kubrick had in mind a film and not a mini-series, but Spielberg will certainly benefit from Kubrick’s early research.

It is likely that Spielberg will only produce the Napoleon series, as he did on “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific”. The scope of the project also means that we can easily look forward to both Napoleon projects, because while Ridley Scott’s film focuses primarily on Napoleon’s rise and marriage, the series will probably go into much more detail and paint an even more rounded picture of Napoleon .

There is no start date for either project, but Scott’s “Napoleon” has already been filmed, which is why Joaquin Phoenix was able to devote himself to “Joker 2”. A start can therefore be expected in late 2023 or early 2024, in time for the Oscars. On the other hand, we will have to wait a few more years for Spielberg’s HBO series, after all, a project of this magnitude takes a lot of time.
