Burgenland’s biggest cause of climate-damaging greenhouse gas emissions is traffic. In contrast, environmentalists are increasingly making people mobile. Because while pollution in the building sector has been reduced by a third since 1990, CO2 emissions on the roads have increased by more than 80 percent.
According to Verkehrsclub Österreich (VCÖ), greenhouse gas emissions per capita in Burgenland are 6300 kilograms per year. “Half of that goes to mobility and goods transport,” they say. Traffic is the biggest cause of greenhouse gases.
“This is where the levers must be applied to bring Burgenland on a climate course,” emphasizes VCÖ expert Lina Mosshammer.
Much remains to be done
While other sectors have succeeded in reducing CO2 emissions within 30 years, emissions on the roads have risen sharply, as studies have shown. “However, the increase in traffic nullifies the savings ”, regrets the VCÖ.
Rethinking encouraged
“Those who cover as many distances as possible on foot or by bike in everyday life keep themselves fit, protect the environment and save a lot of money,” says Mosshammer, encouraging them to rethink. A positive detail: Almost 16 percent of the newly registered cars in Eisenstadt this year already run 100 percent on electricity.
