An initial inventory showed a 25 meter long crack in the false ceiling, Astra wrote in a statement. “Concrete pieces came loose near the north tunnel portal and fell onto the road.”
Jérôme Jacky, Astra’s head of communications, confirmed the damage to SRF News and announced how to proceed: “Now you first have to determine the cause of the damage and the extent of the damage and see how you can repair the damage as quickly as possible.”
The tunnel will remain closed until the work is completed. Jacky concludes how much time it will take to repair the damage is still unknown at this point.
Detour via the San Bernardino
According to Astra, traffic will be rerouted via the San Bernardino route and the Gotthard pass road. Those responsible would be working hard to repair the damage and analyze the cause.

The Gotthard road tunnel had to be closed shortly after 4 p.m. on Sunday for safety reasons. As a result, cars were queued up for several kilometers on both sides, in the north and in the south.
Gotthard Base Tunnel with disabilities
Rail traffic to and from Ticino is also currently restricted. The Gotthard Base Tunnel is closed to passenger traffic after a freight car derailed on August 10th. This will be diverted via the panoramic route – which extends the travel time.
According to SBB, it is not yet known how long this closure will last.
