  • Olympiacos Piraeus also wins the second leg against Aston Villa (2-0) and follows Fiorentina into the Conference League final.
  • The match winner for the Greeks is the Moroccan Ayoub El Kaabi, who scored his tournament goals 9 and 10 (10th and 79th minutes).
  • After the 4-2 win in the first leg in Birmingham, the Greeks left nothing to be desired and are in a European final for the first time.

In the first half, Aston Villa dominated the game throughout. Their ball possession percentage was a whopping 76% at the break. The team from Birmingham hardly knew what to do with the ball.

The hosts were completely different: with the 4-2 first leg win and around 33,000 fans behind them, the Greeks also took the lead in the second leg. Already in the 10th minute, Ayoub El Kaabi used a low cross to make it 1-0 and brought the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium to a boil.

Unimaginative Aston Villa

After the break it continued in the same style. The English had the majority of possession of the ball, but Unai Emery’s team simply lacked ideas against Olympiacos’ tight defense. The Greeks, for their part, relied on the counterattack.

One such event cleared up any doubts about the finalist: El Kaabi started just offside in the 79th minute and scored his 10th goal in the competition and the 5th in the semi-finals. This means he leads the top scorers list.

Premiere – in Athens, of all places

Olympiacos Piraeus qualified for the first time for a final in the European Cup, which will take place in Athens, of all places, but in the stadium of rival AEK. The Greeks will meet AC Fiorentina there on May 29th.

Previously, only one Greek team had managed to qualify for a European final: Panathinakos lost to Ajax Amsterdam in the 1971 Master Cup final.
