The powerful Telecoms and media group Altice has been the subject of a cyberattack led by Hive, a group of hackers. The latter ended up revealing all the data stolen from the company.
Altice, the parent company of SFR, suffered a major data leak after being hit by ransomware. The attack was revealed by the specialist blog Zataz on September 3, 2022. The HIVE hacker group, one of the most prolific in recent times, took the Telecom and media giant’s data hostage on August 9.
More specifically, it would be the servers of Altice International, the holding company based in Luxembourg, which would have been targeted. The group’s employees would have fallen into the ordinary trap of a phishing email. HIVE tried to resell the stolen data, without success, according to Zataz. The group of hackers therefore preferred to publish everything on its site, hosted on the darknet.
A complete economic balance sheet revealed by hackers
Numerama was able to access the files in question. These contain the entire economic life of the group: budget by branch, expenses, travel, leave, expense reports, etc. Some are labeled confidential. In the wrong hands, these files could be used to harm employees or the business. Contacted by Clubic, Altice France ensures that “ the scope of Altice France and SFR is not concerned by the ransomware.
Out of 612 ransomware observed by Intel471 in 2021, 6% were orchestrated by the HIVE group. A significant number, considering that the activity of these hackers has only been spotted since June 2021. More recently, the group attacked the French textile brand Damart, demanding $2 million from the company. The data has yet to leak, but the company has approached law enforcement. So there is little chance that the ransom will be paid.
