Confinement in Xian: the Chinese city produces 15% of Nand memories

The 13 million inhabitants of the Chinese city of Xian have been under very severe confinement since last week. Samsung has said it is “adjusting operations” at its semiconductor factories located there.

“This decision was made in accordance with our commitment to protect the health and safety of our employees and partners, which remains our top priority,” said the Korean giant.

“We will also take all necessary steps, including leveraging our global manufacturing network, to ensure our customers are not affected.”

Xian factories account for 42.5% of Samsung’s NAND output

According to the Korea Economic Daily, factories in Xian account for 42.5% of Samsung’s NAND output, or more than 15% of global output. Samsung has spent more than $ 10 billion to establish the production facilities in Xian and employs more than 3,300 people.

Very affected by the Covid-19, the city is completely cordoned off and looks like a real ghost town.

Images of the deserted city of Xi’an look like Wuhan almost two years ago at the start of the pandemic. Empty arteries and 13 million people locked in their homes in confinement, with a ban on going out, except once every three days for supplies.

The city is cut off from the rest of China

Violators face ten days in prison. The city is cut off from the rest of China. No more trains or planes serve the former Chinese imperial capital.

“Only vehicles carrying basic necessities and medical equipment can enter and leave the city”, explains a local police official quoted by Europe 1, who summarizes these very strict measures. “They can only stay in the area for 12 hours, at the most.”

Hundreds of tankers crisscross the city and spray them with disinfectants. And the population must undergo screening tests every three days. Schools, non-essential shops and businesses are closed, and several town hall officials have been sanctioned for their mismanagement.

Elsewhere in China, Waymo has signed an agreement with Chinese automaker Geely to create an autonomous transport vehicle under Geely’s premium electric brand, Zeekr. Zeekr will build the vehicle at its Swedish facility, and Waymo will integrate its Driver platform and deploy it in the US over the “coming years”.
