In an intervention last Friday, Vladimir Putin said that serious attacks have been carried out against the official sites of government agencies and structures essential for the dissemination of information. Many large companies also bear the brunt of attacks and data leaks of all kinds such as:
- VTB, the second largest bank in Russia
- Wildberries and Avito, e-commerce companies
- Tech giant Yandex (the leak is about its Yandex.Eda food delivery app)
- Delivery Club (a competitor of Yandex.Eda)
Limit what comes from abroad
To strengthen the country’s defense against cyber threats, Vladimir Putin wants to minimize the use of software and hardware from abroad so as to complicate the work of attackers.
The country has already conducted trials in order to completely disconnect from the global Internet, but the current situation only reinforces the idea of Moscow being completely autonomous.
With the restrictions put in place by Western suppliers as a means of pressure and the abrupt cessation of any form of support from others, what was a vague project of total independence seems to be becoming a necessity for the Russian government.
