Confusion about the end of the mask requirement! In these planes, the rule still applies

Instead of a mask requirement, a recommendation should now apply within the EU.

Employees and passengers are no longer obliged to wear them on planes and in airports. A current EU decision provides for this which comes into effect from today.

The EU Commission emphasizes that although this is a decision, the competent authorities in the Member States are free to decide whether or not to adhere to the mask requirement.

In fact, not every EU country is going along with it.

Confusion about new mask policy

According to the Federal Ministry of Health, Germany wants to retain the mask requirement for the time being on all flights that take off or land in Germany.

If you fly from Germany on holiday, you must wear a mask. If you fly back from vacation, you should follow the instructions of the staff and heed the loudspeaker announcements at the airport.

Next Germany the mask requirement still applies (as of May 16) in the following countries: Estonia, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Maltathe Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Spain, Czech Republic and Cyprus.

If you fly to Germany from one of these countries, the mask requirement applies just as much as it does for the outbound flight from Germany to one of these countries.

What should I watch out for now?

Basically, you should always take a mask with you into the flight cabin to avoid any nasty surprises. The EU Air Safety Authority (EASA) provides in a Covid-19 catalog of rules that airlines and employees should recommend their passengers to wear the mask, specifically after the greeting in the flight cabin.

If you did not take a mask into the cabin and your flight is mandatory, you will have to pay around ten euros for a simple FFP2 mask. However, airlines are not obliged to sell masks. The EU aviation safety authority sees it that way too. Therefore, in extreme cases, there is even a risk of being thrown out – including a complaint.

What rule applies when wearing the mask on the plane?

The mask must be worn in the cabin throughout the flight. The only exception is if passengers want something to eat or drink. All airlines strictly comply with the mask requirement. In the worst case, those who refuse are threatened with being thrown out and being banned from the house.
