Conservative legend: Clinton special counsel Kenneth Starr is dead

Legend of the US Conservatives
Clinton Special Counsel Kenneth Starr is dead

In the late 1990s, his piquant investigative report nearly brought down then-US President Clinton. Later, Kenneth Starr is involved again in an impeachment trial – this time he supports Donald Trump as a lawyer. Now the prominent and controversial lawyer has died as a result of an operation.

The US lawyer Kenneth Starr, known for his role as a special counsel in the Lewinsky scandal, is dead. According to his family, he died on Tuesday in Houston, Texas, at the age of 76 from complications resulting from an operation. The former judge served as a special counsel investigating then-President Bill Clinton’s affair with intern Monica Lewinsky in the 1990s.

Clinton faced an impeachment trial for perjury and obstruction of justice in 1999, but escaped impeachment. His infamous “Starr Report,” which documented the president’s relationship with Lewinsky, was peppered with intimate details. Starr’s actions were widely criticized at the time – but in conservative circles the lawyer is a legend.

Dismissed as university president

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday hailed the deceased as “a brilliant attorney, an impressive leader and a self-sacrificing patriot.” The godly lawyer himself came under criticism in 2015 as president of the Baptist private university in Baylor, Texas, over a sex scandal. At the time, he was accused of failing to adequately respond to allegations of sexual abuse by members of the college football team. In 2016 he was released.

After Clinton’s acquittal in 1999, the later US President Donald Trump still described Starr as a “disaster. That did not prevent him from bringing the lawyer into his legal team in 2020 in his own impeachment proceedings. Lewinsky commented on the personnel on Twitter at the time with the Words: “Today is definitely a day of the sort: ‘Are you kidding me?'” Lewinsky had accused the lawyer of having terrorized her at one point. On Tuesday she wrote on Twitter that her feelings for Kenneth Starr were “complicated”, but more important is the pain of his relatives.
