  • Thailand’s Constitutional Court has ruled that the Move Forward party’s candidacy for prime minister was rightly blocked by parliament.
  • Move Forward won the elections in May. She got votes from young and urban voters in particular.
  • Thailand has been led by an interim government for five months. The main parties failed to agree on a government after Move Forward’s Pita Limjaroenrat was rejected as prime minister by the other parties.

The election of the prime minister in Thailand is proving to be difficult. The winner of the parliamentary elections, Pita Limjaroenrat from the progressive Move Forward Party, could not simply win the majority in parliament. A majority of the 250 members of the military-appointed Senate voted against him. The reason for the failure of Pita and his party is their goal of changing the extremely strict lèse-majesté law.

“Of course, Move Forward will not come to the government”

“If we’re honest, it was clear beforehand that Pita Limjaroenrat and Move Forward would not come to power. The Senate and a great many Conservative MPs did not vote for him. Then his coalition fell apart. If the court had debated for a long time whether a second nomination was possible, it would have delayed the whole process,” says Martin Aldrovandi, SRF South Asia correspondent. Now the way is clear for new elections. And Move Forward is in opposition.

A majority of parliamentarians subsequently refused Pita to run again for the post of prime minister.

«rights not violated»

A petition has been filed against this action, which the Constitutional Court has now ruled on. The action of the majority in parliament is lawful, says the constitutional court. “The party’s rights were not violated and it did not have the right to this appeal,” the court said.
