Constitutionalization of abortion: “It’s an additional precaution”, welcomes Sylvain Maillard

337 votes for, 23 against. The deputies expressed themselves favorably this Thursday on the bill of France Insoumise to constitutionalize abortion. Guest of Europe morning this Friday, the vice-president of the Renaissance group in the National Assembly and deputy for Paris, welcomed this progress for women’s rights in France.

Prevent this “symbolic right” from being called into question

“Look at what is happening in the world”, alarms the Parisian deputy. “We have talked a lot about the United States, but look at what is happening in Europe, especially in Hungary, Poland, now in Italy. We see that women’s rights are being called into question”, in these countries, s worries the vice-president of the Renaissance group in the National Assembly. “And therefore this right mainly, which is one of the most symbolic rights, can one day be called into question”, he continues at the microphone of Europe 1.

If the principle of abortion is not called into question in France, Sylvain Maillard considers it appropriate to vote for this constitutionalization now. The bill coming from rebellious France, “we have this larger majority to vote for the text, and so we said to ourselves: ‘Now is the time to do it,’ he assures us.

Referendum

“It’s an additional precaution, we will not go back in France”, he welcomes. “The goal is really to ensure that no law can go back on the right to abortion”. But before celebrating the inclusion of voluntary termination of pregnancy in the Constitution, the bill will have to pass before the senators. Both chambers must be consulted on any amendment to the Constitution. Bad news, as the Luxembourg Palace rejected a first proposal to include abortion in the text last month.

Finally, if the Parliament is in favor of this constitutional revision, the ratification of the latter can only be done by referendum, since the proposal for registration comes from a party sitting in Parliament, and not from the executive.
