Consume carbon-free electricity with EcoWatt

If we should not suffer the same alerts as last year concerning hypothetical power cuts, the arrival of low temperatures and the various energy price increases encourage us to be sober. The state’s recommendations for a temperature inside our homes of 19°C during the day and 17°C at night are still relevant, even if we still don’t really know their origin.

In this context of sobriety, it is always good to come back to eco-gestures that allow you to reduce your energy consumption while making a gesture to fight against global warming. Last year, we presented the EcoWatt application to you.

For the record, EcoWatt is intended to be the weather report for electricity production in France, making it possible to warn users of problems encountered on the network. The system is quite simple, and is based on a three-color display: green, the situation is normal; orange, eco-friendly actions should be taken; red, cuts are inevitable without a significant drop in consumption. It is of course the local SMS alert system which is the most useful for quickly reducing electricity consumption, as no one keeps their eyes glued to the application constantly to monitor the state of the network.

Would you like to know France’s electricity consumption at a given moment in order to know if we are overconsumpting and if outages are expected? So go to EcoWatt.

If disruptions to the electricity network are no longer really on the agenda, consumption reductions are still relevant, as evidenced by a decree passed last September which allows public electricity network managers to eliminate interlocking automatic activation of water heaters between 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. during winter, until March 9, 2024. The EcoWatt application also offers recommendations for both private homes and workplaces, with a new feature introduced recently: indications on the hours when electricity is decarbonized, and therefore produced, among others, by nuclear, hydraulic or wind power.

This new information, symbolized by a small sheet on “green” production hours, is accessible several days in advance, which allows users who are most concerned about fighting global warming to consume electricity at the right time. For the moment, hours are mainly concentrated between midnight and 5 a.m. Enough to schedule the charging of your electric car or the switching on of your water heater or washing machine at these times.
