Contact with authorities – Festival anticipates delay in renovation

In the tender for the expansion, the festival is right on schedule, which envisages completion by 2030. The trained Salzburg native knows, however, that there is hardly a major project that does not encounter major hurdles at some point. In order to avoid this, the festival is already in contact with various authorities.

For the festival, the expansion and general renovation of the stage houses is an unprecedented major project. Not only because the new components in Mönchsberg will belong to the festival fund after completion and the fund will also be the client for the project. According to the current schedule, the first drafts should be available in the summer, and construction should start in 2025.

This is an ambitious schedule for Salzburg and its history of construction delays in major projects. That is why the festival planners are already in constant contact with the building authorities, but also with the monument protection department and the state environmental advocate, in order to prevent possible delays before construction begins.

“Talking to everyone now is also important to us. We don’t want to cause any surprises to the authorities with the submission, ”says Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler. The building costs, of course, offer the potential for unpleasant surprises. According to an index valorisation, this is currently at a range of 335 million euros. An estimate of the costs actually to be expected would be “dubious” before the plans are in place, as festival director Lukas Crepaz says.
