The 1963 Franco-Italian film, adapted from the novel Contempt (1954) by Alberto Moravia, features Michel Piccoli and Brigitte Bardot. Forbidden to those under 18 when it was released, Le Mépris was screened exclusively in five Parisian theaters on December 27, 1963. In ten weeks of operation, it accumulated a total of 235,000 spectators, thus achieving the 7th best performance at the box office of French films of the year. Although this is a failure for a film with Brigitte Bardot, it is a real success for a film by Jean-Luc Godard.
