Canada wants to make the most common contraceptives free for women.
It is the first step in a planned health care reform.
IUDs, hormone implants, the contraceptive pill and the morning-after pill are to become free for women in Canada. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said this on Saturday.
The cost of the most commonly used pregnancy prevention methods will be covered for the approximately nine million women of reproductive age, Freeland said at a press conference at a Toronto pharmacy.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reported on Platform That’s why we make contraceptives free.” The birth control pill in Canada costs up to 200 francs annually. A hormonal coil can cost around 330 francs.
First part of a health care reform
Making contraceptives free is the first step in comprehensive health care reform in Canada. In addition to contraceptives, Canada also wants to cover the costs of diabetes medication for around 3.7 million Canadians. The cost and timing of the launch were not initially disclosed.
The Canadian government must obtain approval from the provinces responsible for health for the health reform. Alberta and Quebec have already declared that they do not want to take part.
